Summary of 2007:

Wellsfield Trout Fishery owners, fishery manager and bailiffs would like to thank all anglers who supported the fishery over the year.  The fisheries reputation has went from strength to strength in 2007 and Wellsfield is one of the best day ticket bank fisheries in Scotland.  There has been anglers visiting from all over Scotland from as far as Inverness and Fort William and from England, Ireland and Wales.  The fishery is now well established and the marginal and aquatic fly and bait life is prolific.  The water quality is excellent.

The fishery was re-awarded Troutmaster Status for 2008, and also re-awarded its 4 Star Rating from Visitscotland for 2008.

The fishery management work undertaken in 2007 has been at its best so far with many major improvements made to make the fishery top class.  Improvements took the form of the top fly pond "lochan Hearadh" being further established after it was extended to double its original size.  The bait pond was also further established after the bait pond “Lochan Fionn” being extended to 25% larger in 2006.  Tree felling in some places and tree planting in others was completed.  in addition landscaping, flowering plants and marginal plants were improved to help aquatic insect life thrive.  The result was record hatches of buzzers, damsel fly, mayfly, dragonfly, daddies and other insects.  It was also noted that the population of small fish fry was up, including minnows and stickleback.

The Stocking Policy was improved and Devon Rainbows were stocked, the average size was increased with larger fish and fish stocking numbers were increased on the previous year, the average fish size (3lb+), the fish quality, strength and fight was rated higher than ever.  Fish catch returns, number of anglers, number of double figure specimen trout, number of 4lb-10lb fish and number of Troutmasters entries were all up on last year.  Blue Trout, Brown Trout and Tiger trout were stocked in addition to the Rainbows.

Wellsfield provided a record number of fishing lessons this year to teaching young anglers and older anglers how to fly fish or bait fish.  We are proud to see so many new anglers are taking up the sport.

The number of £50 Yellow and £500 White tagged prize winners was also up.  Club Bookings and corporate days were a major success with the barbecue/buffet services.  Charity fundraisers, youth group outings, special needs and disabled group days were all a big success.  Junior angler numbers encouragingly increased.

The top 3 flies were Yellow Dancer, Orange Cheeked Black Buzzer and Damsel.

The fishery summer evening sessions were extended with additional floodlights around the fishery ponds. The Automatic Ice Prevention Wave Machines ensured all 3 lochans were open in winter, the car park was extended for coaches and mini-buses, Fishing Pegs were improved including disabled access pegs.

The fishery is spring fed with crystal clear water plus a natural feeder burn.  There is an abundance of natural insect life and an abundance of aquatic life including nymphs, buzzers, fry, minnow, stickleback, beetles, shrimp, snails, flies, amphibians and terrestrials which encourages the trout to be free rising, in fact it is not unusual to see trout rising even on the coldest and dullest of days, giving excellent surface sport.
Floating, intermediate and sinking lines work well with a long leader.
Buzzers, Bloodworm, Nymphs (Pheasant Tail, Hares Ear, Damsels, Dragonfly), Attractor Lures, Cats, Fritzs,
Crafetyes, Dancers, Wagglers, Emergers, Dry Flies and selections of traditional wet flies all catch plenty fish.
We run a White Tagged Prize Fish (£500) and Yellow Tagged Prize Fish (£50) Competition:
Catch a white tagged fish and win the money in the kitty.  Prize fish are stocked and caught regularly.

A friendly and welcoming atmosphere, a peaceful and very tranquil spot.
The fishery is managed to maximise the enjoyment of trout fishing.
Keen fishermen ourselves, we have used our own knowledge
and experience of trout fishing and field sports, countryside land management,
wildlife habitat conservation and tourism and leisure management to create
an outstanding trout fishery which offers something special to the keen trout fisherman.

HISTORY OF WELLSFIELD TROUT FISHERY

Wellsfield Trout Fishery was developed from old ponds (old historical water storage reservoirs) which have been around for over 150 years and date back to the early 18th Century.  During the 18th century Wellsfield Farm was used to store water, in small storage reservoirs, to the north of the farm, next to the Chough Glen, at an elevation above the Avon Burn (which is a tributary of the River Carron).  The stored water was fed down through the Chough Glen and used to turn the mill wheels of the mills on the Avon Burn downstream.  The water in the reservoirs would have been used by the mills to produce wool, flax, and to bruise barley and oats.  Historical and O/S maps show the reservoirs at Wellsfield date back to before 1850, and the remains of one of the reservoirs can still be seen today at Wellsfield.  Historical O/S maps also show High Quarter Mill, Low Quarter Mill and Lower Mill on the Avon Burn in Loudens Glen just north of Dunipace and the remains of the mill buildings and sluice ditches can still be seen today.

The catchment reservoirs were dug by hand, horse and cart in the early 1800’s above the Chough Glen on Wellsfield because the site is ideal  - it sits high on a hill providing water at force to the Avon Burn, has a plentiful supply of water to it and has ease of access (the original Stirling Road runs past it).  Water sources include groundwater springs, wells, surface water streams, field drains and issues.
